Ceremonies

For the Kofanes, the celebration of
ceremonies constitutes an essential
part of their culture since this is a
space where physical and spiritual
aspects are discussed around the
sacred plant (yagé or ayahuasca).
The advice of shamans who carry
ancient knowledge is venerated
while maintaining balance and
harmony between man and mother
nature.

The sacred plant is also used for
fortune telling, decision making,
conflict resolution and medical
treatment. Diseases in Kofán
cosmology are divided between
those of physical and magical or
supernatural origin.

During rituals, a shaman can turn
his spirit into a Jaguar, Tiger, Parrot,
Boa, or Dragon.
