K ofán women
The Kofán woman is also a great connoisseur
of plants since one of her main functions within
the family is to cultivate and harvest the food
to consume. Each family has a territory called
Chagra, where they grow bananas, corn, cassava,
coffee, among others. Although this place is initially
prepared by men through burning of plantations
that act as fertilizer and augurs well for the new
plantations, it is the women who cultivate and
collect its fruit.
They are great artisans, since they create necklaces
with all kinds of seeds and shells, woven with
palm leaves and clay pots. These handicrafts are
used mainly by the elders of the community and
currently also generate a source of income by
being sold to foreigners who visit them.
