Kayap ó Paintings






            Their physical appearance is recognized by a
            peculiar haircut which the top of the head is
            shaved in a V shape. In addition, they often adorn
            their bodies with feather crowns, cotton earrings,
            necklaces and bracelets made from plant seeds or
            glass fibers.

            Dances and rituals are a very important part of their
            community, many of them tell the stories of their
            ancestors. They are practiced for several hours and
            even days in a row, to strengthen their links with each
            other and nature.

            Therefore, they spend several hours decorating their
            bodies with different paintings. Each dance or ritual
            has its own painting. The most common paintings
            are used by the Kayapó are based on black and red
            pigments, obtained from fruits, nuts and charcoal.

            Normally mothers or grandmothers are in charge of
            decorating the bodies of children. With expertise
            and masterful finesse, they create all kinds of
            patterns that cover their entire bodies and faces.
            These paints can usually last for weeks on their skins
            and the Kayapó are presumed to decorate their
            children's bodies for their protection and for their
            bodies to grow and develop properly.
